Overview

mpvEx is a free and open-source Android media player built on libmpv. We respect your privacy: no personal data is collected, no analytics or trackers are used, and no advertisements are displayed.

Data Collection

We do not collect, transmit, store, or sell any personal data:

• No personal information (names, emails, phone numbers, accounts).
• No device identifiers (IMEI, Android ID, MAC address, advertising ID).
• No analytics, telemetry, or tracking SDKs.
• No user media files or playback data are ever uploaded to remote servers.

Permissions

mpvEx requests permissions strictly to function as a local media player:

• READ_MEDIA_VIDEO / READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE: To discover, index, generate thumbnails for, and play video and audio files on your device.
• MANAGE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE: (Standard flavor only) For file operations (rename, delete, move) across directories and USB OTG drives.
• INTERNET: Exclusively to stream URLs provided by the user (HTTP/HLS/RTSP) and check for app updates from GitHub releases.
• FOREGROUND_SERVICE / FOREGROUND_SERVICE_MEDIA_PLAYBACK: To support background playback and Picture-in-Picture mode.
• POST_NOTIFICATIONS: To display playback controls in the system notification area on Android 13+.
• REQUEST_INSTALL_PACKAGES: (Standard flavor only) To allow direct in-app updates from GitHub releases.

Local Storage

All app settings, playback positions, and history are stored locally on your device using SQLite/Room and DataStore. You can clear this data at any time from within the app settings or Android app storage settings.

Network Streaming

When you play a network stream or connect to a local share (SMB/WebDAV/FTP), the connection is made directly between your device and the target server. No intermediate proxy or tracking servers are used.
